Our History
The Mothers’ Union is a world wide organisation founded in 1876 by Mrs. Mary Sumner. There are over 3,000,000 members throughout 70 countries and projects include Literacy Programmes in Sudan, Milawi and Burundi, Parenting, ‘Away From it All’ holidays and much more.

The Mothers' Union was founded in Ireland in 1887 and the first Tullow Branch was founded circa the 1904. The Mothers' Union is a worldwide society whose aim is the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life. In order to carry out this aim its objectives are:
(a)    To uphold Christs' teaching on the nature of marriage and to promote its wider understanding.
(b)    To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church.
(c)    To maintain a world-wide Fellowship of Christians, united in prayer, worship and service.
(d)    To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.
(e)    To help those whose family life has met with adversity.

Tullow Mothers’ Union is a Branch made up of members from two groups of parishes.
Tullow Group  -  Tullow , Shillelagh, Aghold and Mullinacuffe
Fenagh Group  -  Fenagh., Aghade, Myshall and Ardoyne.

Our Branch has 32 members including 2 indoor members. We have monthly meetings from September to May at which we usually have guest speakers covering a wide range of interesting topics. We have some fund raising events to support
overseas missions and other charities such as the Tsunami Appeal.

The Branch Banner was dedicated by the Rt. Rev. N.V. Willoughby in St. Columba’s Church, Tullow on Mothering Sunday, 13th March, 1988. The Banner was designed and made by Rosemary Pierce, Jean Binions and Ena Atkinson to celebrate the Centenary of the foundation of Mothers’ Union and is used at Mothers’ Union Church Services.

From 1904 to the present day many evenings of faith, fellowship and fun have been shared by the members through the years.
